Sorry Roadies! The damage the iceberg inflicted on the ship were gashes down the PORT side of the vessel, not the starboard side as we said on the episode...
The Captain misspoke!
RMS (which by the stands for Royal Mail Ship) Tayleur was NOT a steam ship. She was actually a three masted clipper ship. She was unusual in that she was steel as opposed to wood, but she was a sail powered ship.
She left Liverpool on her maiden voyage on January 19, 1853 and on January 21, 1853 ran aground on Lambay Island in the Irish Sea and promptly sank, taking with her 350 of the 640 passengers aboard. Amazingly, among the 290 survivors there were only 3 women and 3 children!
Below you're looking at RMS Tayleur then and now...

As discussed in the episode, HMHS (Her Majesty's Hospital Ship) Britanic never served as a cruise ship. Ironically if not for the sinking of the Titanic that probably wouldn't have been the case. After Titanic (or the Olympic...) went down construction on Britanic came to a halt and she was redesigned to implement safety features to prevent a recurrence of her sister's sinking. As it started to look as though the war wasn't coming to an end anytime soon, she was requisitioned by the crown, and during construction she was refitted, and she entered service on December 23, 1915 as a hospital ship. On November 21, 1916 she hit a submerged mine in the Aegean Sea and sank. She was the largest ship sunk during World War 1 and is the largest known intact shipwreck in the world. To the right we have Britanic and U-73, the submarine that brought about her demise... |
